World Masters Mountain Races

Report by Gary Bastow

Today (Saturday 28th September) I proudly ran in the World Masters Mountain Races in Gagliano Del Capo in Southern Italy. It has hosted seventy nations in the veterans championships and is a beautiful part of Italy.

270 runners of v60+ (going up in five year groups ) took part. Boy, there are some great runners on that world stage. There’s the female sector running on the day also at separate times.

It’s a 330 metre rocky ascent over the one and a half lap 4.5 mile course starting from sea level up to the town centre, and then back down to the start. Up a rocky gully before climbing back into the town to the finish, there was about a mile of hilly roads thrown in.

The weather was 30C, which was a pain!

I was 27th overall, 20th in the v60 for which I was pleased but that got me a silver medal for the British team and a place on a podium is memorable.
