Welsh Ultra

Colm O’Cofaigh did the ‘Vegan Welsh 3k Ultra’ on Saturday, a 34 miles race with over 13,000 feet of ascent, which runs over the summits of all of the mountains over 3,000 feet in Wales. The route is in three parts. A 5am start sees runners go up Snowden, then Garnedd Ugain followed by the spectacular knife-edge arête of Crib Goch and a descent to the first of two main CPs in Nant Peris. After that the route climbs up Elidir Fawr, Y Garn, Glyder Fawr, Glyder Fach and Tryfyn. This section is over very rough and technical ground. After the second CP in Ogwen runners climb up onto the Carnedds where they traverse Pen yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd, Yr Elen, Carnedd Llewelyn, Foel Grach, Carnedd Gwenllian and the final summit of Foel Fras before a finish down near the coast. The rules state that runners have to remain vegan for the day so no sneaky mars bars or sausage rolls, but Colm still finished in 14 hours 17 minutes.
