The Yomp (Kirkby Stephen)

Report by Lucy Smith

Yesterday I took part in The Yomp at Kirkby Stephen. This is a really low key race which is open to walkers and runners. It has 3 distances, short which is 6ish miles, half which is 11.5 miles and the full being 23 miles.

I chose to do the half Yomp. Starting from the Grammar School the course was a mixture of road, trail, fell, and peat bogs. For the first 7 miles the course was predominantly uphill which was hard work especially over the boggy tussocks.

Eventually we reached the Nine Standards Rigg at about mile 7. From then on it was mainly downhill to the finish back at the school. I completed the Yomp Half in 2 hours 34 minutes. I loved the laid back nature of this race and although it is a very hilly course will definitely be back to have a go at the full Yomp’.
