Ravenscar half Marathon was billed as follows: a 13.1 mile challenging off road half marathon – it delivered on all that it promised!
Starting from Ravenscar Village Hall situated 700 feet above sea level, overlooking Robin Hood’s Bay the route then gently descended the coastal path along the dramatic sea cliffs. At Petard point it turned through Staintondale via open fields, woodland and the disused railway line until you reach Cloughton Wyke, then it was back to Ravenscar all the way on the coastal footpath via the roller coastal of Hayburn Wyke (that’s a nice way of saying a killer of a down and uphill section that definitely made your legs and lungs burn). Then back to Ravenscar (more uphill…. forgot it was downhill on the way out!) Turning back onto the road you suddenly realised how steep the ‘little’ Hill was back to the finish!
The run was very well marked, well signed and well marshalled (I would expect nothing less from the mountain rescue team who were putting on the event!)
The only thing missing this year was the stunning views due to the sea Mist/fog. Otherwise a great day out.
I think I was the lone representative for Ripon, although I bumped into a couple of Simon McCuddens pals who were primed to look for me – Chris from Harrogate and Edna from Knaresborough – which was great.
End result: Very tired, achy legs, 2h 18min (faster than Malhamdale) and looks like I was third in my age group (although I think there were only 9 of us!). A Grand day out!
