Race the Train
Stan Appleton made his annual trip to Mid-Wales for the ‘Race the Train’ event, and in its 35th year it has so far raised more than £100,000 for local charities.
The 14 mile route is off-road and climbs 500 metres or so in total; while it’s easy to beat the train full of waving passengers on its 7 mile uphill leg, gravity helps the train on its return leg while the runners not only tire but have a much more technical route to contend with.
The holiday atmosphere draws runners from across the country. About 60 of the 1000 runners usually beat the train. Stan took 2 hours 24 minutes, two minutes less than last year and close to his best recent time.
