Peco XC Race 2 Middleton Park

After the Temple Newsam race where the ground was boggy, the weather somewhat inclement and the going very tough, it was no surprise to find conditions at Middleton Park in South Leeds, very similar. The only thing missing being the horseflies nipping at our flesh thankfully. This brought great seasonal joy, to our team, especially as a few were still a little full of the ‘xmas spirit’ from the night before, as after all, this is what we look forward to (allegedly!).
A 4.7 mile course, a change since last year, saw nearly 900 runners tackle 2.5 laps of a very bumpy field followed by some woodland trails including some technical descents and challenging rises. Good shoe choice was invaluable and a fast finish, saw all runners tested to the max, on a course where speed could be maintained, their was little respite.
Coping best for the men, with the conditions was John Chatwin in 89th place in a time of 32.06, followed by Mark Ryder in 33.03. Andrew Harker was 3rd home for Ripon in 38.12.
Further down the field the competition remained competitive, with Tim Joynson, re kindling his love for XC in 43.36, with Andy Purll holding off the challenge of Paul Brockett in 44.04 and 44.34 respectively.
The ladies were equally competitive with a Anneke Imeson holding off the stiff challenge of Suzanne Rickard in 40.25 and 40.29, and the evergreen Angela Benson in 41.19.
In their own little battle, Sarah Woffinden held off Anne Cheeseman in 45.06 and 45.10, neither were able to relax as Hazel Russell followed them in, with a time of 45.44.
Next race is at Harrogate on the 19th Jan, would be great see a full team effort at our “Derby”, you might even see some comedy gold as you watch Dougie and me try to erect a tent!
