Peco West Yorkshire Cross Country League - Round 1
Sunday saw over 1000 athletes head to Middleton Park in Leeds to take part in the first round of the cross country league. The league is made up of divisions of clubs, who get promoted and relegated like football, based on their performance over 5 events, the aim being to win their league/ seniors league.
Clubs mass in their bespoke tents, with various warm up routines and team hugs / chants seen and heard before the teams head to the start, the men and ladies participating in their own races after the juniors finish.
The 4.8 mile route is a mixture of fields, woodland trails, brief tarmac and includes a few descents and hills. Conditions were slippery, so early positioning, careful picking of routes and resilience was the order of the day as Ripon runners battled through the elements.
Ripon were “dipping their toes in the water” as far as X-country goes and were running as guests. Angela Benson, a seasoned professional at these events, gave the best age category performance, by finishing 5th in her group, course knowledge providing useful.
Will Cunningham was first male back in 32nd place in 29.43, Mark Ryder just pipped Simon Cave in 95th and 96th place (32.30, 32.23), Douglas Scott came next in 145th, Andy Purll enjoyed his first X-country for 33 years in 437th with a delayed Alex Macey finishing next after travel problems.
For those who enjoyed the evening league, why don’t you join us on the 16th December for the next race? £14 gets you 5 races plus after race food (bacon sandwiches and cake!). The next race is at Temple Newsam, we would love a few extras to share the fun!
