Original Everest Marathon (Highest Marathon)
Report by Chris Brown
Chris Brown along with 2 other Fountains Park Runners Adam Prentis (Harrogate Runners) and Stephanie Wilson (Pudsey Runners) have just returned from Nepal after completing the Everest Marathon.
After 14 days trekking, camping and acclimatising (coldest winter for 10 years) – on 2nd December race day dawned with temperatures of -16C at the start, which was 5,400 metres, just below Everest Base Camp. Getting to the start was not easy but having passed their medical they started the 26 mile marathon down to Namche Bazaar at 3,440 metres going through 8 check points with very rocky trails, some steep ascents and descents.
Chris was celebrating 30 years, from running the race in 1989 in 6hr 20 mins to finished 1st over 70 in 10 hr 30m… 2nd fastest vet in O.E.M. history. Adam ran in 7hr 10m – Stephanie ran in 7hr 49m. The three of them (two hares and a tortoise!) won the team prize.
Funds were raised for Community Action Nepal, which is rebuilding after the earthquake and also Claro Enterprises Community Workshop in Starbeck.
Everyone safely back in Yorkshire!
