Longmynd Hike

Tim Joynson made his regular visit south to the Shropshire / Welsh border region for the Longmynd Hike, an event supported and organized by the local Scouts. The race comprises of a 50 mile long route taking in several peaks totaling over 8,000 feet of ascent. As the 600 runners and walkers see the lights of Church Stretton and the finish line, the race manages a small detour away from the town to pack in one final peak climbing 650 feet, before a 1 mile ascent to the finish. The race starts at 1pm which means most runners and all the walkers complete about half of the course in darkness. After sunset, rules dictate that competitors must join together in groups of at least three, to ensure everyone finishes safely. Unfortunately Stan Appleton had to withdraw last week due to injury, but Tim completed the challenge in 14 hours 25 minutes, while Matthew Holt finished in 12 hours 18 minutes.
