LDWA Blubberhouses Moor 25, 27 March

Report by James Stuart-Mills

I had a great day on Sunday at the LDWA Blubberhouses Moor 25. After two years with no Wensleydale Wedge, this really needed to be done.

The route starts at Bland Hill at the south end of Fewston Reservoir. We followed a pleasant track along the edge of the reservoir, then on to the huge dam at the bottom of Thruscross reservoir along the 6 Dales Trail before striking out up and across the moors to Rocking Hall. You may have seen this on the right in the far distance as you head west on the A59 at Blubberhouses – I’ve driven past it for years but never visited! The route is then down to Bolton Priory (a fine view), then on and up to Beamsley Beacon. This was the second major climb on the route and the last, with the rest being a long haul across the moors beyond Beamsley back to the start. For me this felt like a long way but it wasn’t really – it was just a rough path with quite a few bogs.

This was a well-organised event with a fantastic route and loads of upbeat people of all abilities having a brilliant day. £8 for the day including a hot meal – you can’t beat it!

It took me 5 hours 20 mins to finish. I met one other RR on the day but didn’t catch him at the end.
