James Herriot Country Trail Run

Report by Kim Brown

Eleven Ripon Runners made the trip north-west for the James Herriot Country Trail Run on Sunday July 28th. The race starts from the pretty village of Castle Bolton near Leyburn.

The race is in its fifteenth year and is organised by the Rotary Club of Wensleydale. Weather this year was dry, but very hot when the sun occasionally shone!

The first half a mile of the 14K (8.6m) race is flat and goes past the impressive castle before a sharp left turn takes the runners up the steep, bumpy mile long trail up to Black Hill. It is certainly a tough climb at this early stage and the runners quickly thin out into a long train (of which there is an impressive photograph on the official website, taken from the bottom of the hill).

At Black Hill there is a ninety degree turn along a welcome flat section of the course. The route along this section is a wide, moorland path with stunning views across to Pen Hill with lies to the south across the valley. There is some time to regain breath along this 2 mile section before another ninety degree turn, this time going steeply downhill towards Greenhaw Hut on the horizon. This section can be ridiculously fast if need be before another steep climb up to Greenhaw Hut. Even the leaders can be seen walking some of this hill before another welcome downhill section on the other side.

A brief run through a quarry is next before leaving the moorland terrain behind and running the final couple of miles across bumpy fields and muddy tracks to the finish.

There is no goody bag at the finish but each runner receives ample access to water!

The finishing positions and respective times of each Ripon Runner are recorded below.

Victoria Morris – 2nd in a time of 70.33
Kim Brown – 5th in a time of 60.03
