Ilkley Trail Race
Report by Kim Brown
This 6.9 mile, mainly off off-road trail race starts from just behind Ilkley Lido at the northern side of the town. The route is an out and back course which is uphill for the first half of the race and downhill, back to the finish for the second half. The first 200 metres are on the road before a left turn into Middleton Woods and the route then continues relentlessly uphill through fields and along trails before a small section of road.
After approximately 2 and a half miles we approach Langbar Moor to the north of Ilkley. Once on the moor, this is where the stunning views over Wharfedale become apparent. The climbing never seems to end but at about 3 and a half miles we are finally rewarded with a bit of downhill running, albeit along rough moorland terrain. There is then another smallish section of road running before we are once again running slightly uphill across moorland again.
At mile 5 we join our outward route and follow the lovely downhill final 2 miles of the route back across the fields and through Middleton Woods again. A sharp right hand turn at the bottom of the woods gives us a ridiculously fast finish down the road before a sharp left onto the field at the rear Ilkley Lido and onto the finish.
This race costs £10 if entered in advance but I entered on the day and paid £15. There is also an under 8’s fun run of 500 metres and an 8-18 fun run of 1 mile. All finishers received a t-shirt of the non-technical variety!
