HDSRL race 1 - Harrogate

Hope you have all recovered from last week’s terrific event. For those of you who weren’t there, the Harrogate race is 6 miles in length, mainly on tarmac. The first couple of miles are relatively flat and then at the 2nd mile mark, runners climb constantly up a punishing hill for 0.7 miles. A flat/descending section follows before a sharp left takes runners onto the only non tarmac section that follows a path up another steep hill and then cruelly continues on road for a further 300 yards. From here, runners can begin to stretch their legs and finally descend the final 400 yds to a fast finish.

I hope, like me, you enjoyed the great race laid on for us by Harrogate Harriers.
I remember the hills from last time, but my legs are reminding me this morning even more, just how steep they were. I hope you have taken time to look at the amazing pictures taken by John Skinner, currently on the FB club site, so many members looking determined and up for the challenge. I reckon John has landed himself the role of Ripon Runners official photographer for the series!

I would like to personally thank the 98 members who took part in the race, a club record, with the race itself having 531 athletes, a league best. I know many of you recorded some great times and even some PB’s, don’t be shy, let us know your stories!

Overall team results are due to be posted on the league website shortly with individual results (provisional) already there. In terms of the overall league, Harrogate clearly had a great night with their first 10 athletes being in the top 14, so will score heavily. Knaresborough had the next best showing with us and Otley close behind.

First home for the men was Kim Brown, followed by Simon Cave and Lenny Lennox, for the ladies, Victoria Morris came home 1st with Kari Munro and Wendy Marks next, some great running amongst tough competition, well done all.

In the age categories we claimed some great results.

Mens results
Kim Brown claimed second in The mens vets over 45
Lenny lennox claimed second in the Mens vets over 55
John Ward claimed second in the mens vets over 70
John Grundy claimed 2nd in the mens vets over 75’s
