Grim Up North Pateley Pie & Pint

Report by Lena Conlin

Saturday 1st Feb was the Pateley Pie and Pint. The race is on 5 mile laps on trail. The race has 6 distances, 5, 10, 15, 20, 26.2 (additional 1.2 miles before starting the laps) and 30 miles. The different distances are set off at different times to prevent congestion at gates and stiles.

I had entered the 20 mile (4 lap) race, but feeling good I upgraded to the marathon. The course was muddy and with each lap got progressively more muddy. There were other Ripon Runners doing the various distances and it was nice to greet them at different parts of the course. The marathon had 612 m of elevation.
The race was chip timed and the reward was a Pie, a bottle of beer and a medal which doubles up as a bottle opener.

Results were:
Lena Conlin Marathon 5:27:33
Kevin Jackson 20 mile 3:41:51
Helen Cox 10 mile 1:40:29
Lucy Smith 10 mile 1:57:30
Kathryn Smith 10 mile 1:59:43
Beth Constantine 5 mile 44:34
Darryl Hall 5 mile 57:07

There were other RRs there but they haven’t got the club by their names, sorry if I’ve missed you.

I like lapped races, thy are quite social and you can leave things at the start/finish, passing regularly for if you need to dump your jacket or collect something.

This was a very spontaneous sign up for me. Entering just 3 days before the race. Being my first 20 miler I just went to enjoy it, and enjoy it I did! The route consisted of 4, 5 mile laps, an out and back with a loop on the end. It was mostly flat apart from one very muddy hill. It was a windy day but luckily a lot of the route was sheltered which helped. I loved literally every second of this race. Such a beautiful route along the river with a variety of tracks meant that it didn’t get boring. Some how I managed to come away as 3rd lady in 3hrs 18 minutes. Well done to all the other Ripon Runners who were running.
