Darlington 10k
Report by Jill Holt
Almost perfect running conditions met a handful of Ripon Runners as they travelled to Darlington on Sunday for the town’s annual 10k Road Race.
With more than 1,500 runners it was a huge event, and very well organised. All roads were closed and it felt like most of Darlington had come out to support the runners, alongside a steel band and other music along the way. Whilst a two loop circuit of the town centre may not sound particularly inspiring, it meant that there was support for nearly all of the route; and with very little elevation, it made for an enjoyable experience (certainly for me, as I had participated in the ’3 races in a day’ event the day before).
Lee Stanley was first home for Ripon, in a fantastic time of 37.06, and 7th in his age category. Both Trevor Schofield and Dougie Scott were not far behind, with times of 37.25 and 37.29, and Dougie coming 8th in his age category. Both Lee and Dougie knocked about 30 seconds off their last year’s times, so well done guys.
The Oates family also made the trip up to the North East, with Steve finishing in 46.16 and Emma and Tom finishing in 1.04.51.
I ran without a watch, as I was happy to just complete my fourth race. I was delighted, therefore, when my time came through as 48.06 and I too came 8th in my age group.
The atmosphere and organisation was terrific, and it comes as no surprise that the Darlington 10k is one of the most popular in the North East.
From someone who rarely runs road races, I would certainly recommend it.
