Claire Baker headed to Waverton, near Chester on Saturday to compete in the Chester Ultra. The race fuses trails on the River Dee with the North Cheshire Way and the Amazing Sandstone Trail taking in Helsby Hill, Frodsham, and Delamere Forest. Starting at 6am with a headtorch the race covers very varied terrain, with the first half being relatively flat and the middle section having 3000ft of climb over a relatively short distance. The race then finishes along canal tow paths. There were 300 entrants, the route measures just over 51 miles and Claire finished in 9 hours 17 minutes, claiming 3rd lady and 37th overall. The race is organised by GB Ultras and is very well organised and the early start means that you can use all of the day’s light.
