Captain Cooks Fell Race

Five members of RR went to Great Ayton for the 5 miles long and 800ft ascent Captain Cook Fell Race, on New Year’s Day. The course starts with a gentle climb up through woods then a very steep and long ascent taking runners to Captain Cooks monument. There follows a very steep and muddy descent back down to a stretch of road before crossing over fields and yet more mud to return into Great Ayton. The conditions meant there were many fallers and plenty of sliding but all competitors enjoyed the race, which raised £2000 for a local cancer charity and the floods.

Sally Houghton was first home for the club and 10th female overall in 41 minutes 18 seconds, with James Boddy next in 43:28, closely followed by Martin Gabriel (44:47) and Dave Ritson, who has been out injured for 3 months, making a strong return in 45:58. John Bull completed the line-up in 65:41
