Borrowdale Fell race
Report by Alex Fawcett
Today I took part in the Borrowdale fell race. 16.61 miles and just over 6970ft of ascent.
My aim was to finish within 5 hours but when I saw the quality of the start line up that included Nicky Spinks and Ricky Lightfoot my aim was not to be last!
404 runners set off from Rosthwaite and headed along a trail until turning and climbing up to the first check point (cp1) at Bessy Boot. I intentionally started near the back of the pack and started to make progress once CP1 passed. Esk Hause was CP2 and this was a long but speedy section over fell and bog. Top of Scarfell pike was CP3 and that was a great battle moving quickly to the top passing more runners on route. A tricky decent down towards corridor route for styhead stretcher box CP4 was followed by a very tough climb up great gable for CP5. As I ran towards Honister slate mine and CP6 I ran out of water so made a quick detour to a stream to refill. From Honister it was a long climb up to the top of Dale Head and final CP7 and then a fast 3 mile decent to the finish at Rosthwaite.
I finished in 4 hours 31 mins.
Cheese sandwiches and tea in the village hall was most welcome. If you are looking for tough challenging fell races, keep an eye on FRA website, I will certainly (god willing) be doing more of these.
