2023 Filey Flyer - 14 January
Report by Matthew Holt
A select group of Ripon Runners finest athletes made the early morning drive to Filey on Saturday 14th Jan for the LDWA organised Filey Flyer event.
This race is organised every 2 years, alternating each year with the Scarborough Rock event.
There are two distance options, a short course of 16 miles and a long course of 21 miles.
The forecast of heavy rain and high winds proved wrong thankfully, with blue skies and only slightly strong breeze at times.
A brilliant run and first back for Ripon Runners in 3 hours 9 mins and 4th overall was Paul Walker, followed by me in 3 hours 30 minutes.
Lucy and Ed Smith completed the list of long course finishers in 5 hours 59 minutes.
Simon McCudden, Pam Munroe and Tim Joynson took the short route option and finished in 3 hours 54 mins.
Dave Allen didn’t have a race number, so tagged along with me for a gentle training run. Dave finished in 3 hours 19 mins, which would have been quicker, but he waited for me for a long time until finally running off and leaving me with 6 miles to go. Unfortunately, Strava doesn’t have a ‘deduct time due to waiting for Herbert’ option, so his best time is unknown but maybe Dave can go for a quicker time in 2025.
