Swaledale Marathon
On Saturday 13 June, a large number of members competed at the 23.2mile long Swaledale Marathon, which starts with a steep 1 mile ascent of Fremington Edge. The predicted heavy rain, blustery and cold conditions never materialised and instead competitors had humid and dry conditions with very little wind.
First back for Ripon was Alex Fawcett in 3 hours 24 minutes, closely followed by David Jelley in 3:32. Only 16 minutes split the next 5 Ripon members of Michael Hall (4:02), Ray Raper (4:05), Matthew Holt (4:08), Iain Wallace (4:15) and Ripon’s first lady Anneke Imeson (4:18) who took 47 minutes last year’s effort.
Sally Leck had a bad fall 3 miles from the finish and received bruising to her face and a cut chin, which later required stiches, however, she bravely continued to the finish in 4:27.
Other results were: Jo Wallace (4:30), Tim Joynson and Heather Glegg (4:51), Lena Conlin (5:07), Fred Clapham (5:45), Mike Penock (6:53), and finally Chris Bennett, Ursula Watson, Mel Dutka, Dawn Griffin and Robin Kehoe (7:05).
