Ripon Ladies Claim Bedrace Hat Trick
Ripon Runners Ladies team claimed the female title for the third consecutive year at the 2014 Knaresborough Bed Race (14 June). The event draws crowds of 25,000 people, who cheer the 90 teams around the 2 mile course before the final sprint to the line, which includes a river crossing. This year’s team comprised last year’s winners Becky Turner, Suzanne Rickard and Donna Riddler, with new team mates Jill Holt, Sharon Barlow Hamilton and Tori Green providing a ready source of inspiration. James Chapman was the fearless passenger.
With last minute changes needed for the men’s team, Sharon Barlow Hamilton’s husband Matthew stepped up to the challenge to lead a magnificent effort. The male team started off in 11th position and, with only a week to prepare and no previous experience of what the bed race involved, did magnificently to finish 13th overall. The whole team was: Matthew Barlow, Paul Dargavel, Nathan Rainbow, Ian Chapman, Ross Wilcox and Tom Bird with Ripon Junior runner Chloe Dalton the passenger.
