Ironman UK at Bolton

Five intrepid club members competed in Sundays Ironman UK event in Bolton (19 July), each attempting the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run, all in a maximum cut off time of 17 hours. Heavy rain hampered vision for the swim section as they completed 2 laps in open water at Pennington Flash, before tackling high winds on the undulating bike ride around the roads of Lancashire.

John Bull was very unlucky to be just 5 minutes outside the cut-off time as he completed the bike ride and was therefore retired by officials at transition 2. However, Billy Conlin, Martin Cunningham, Jill Holt and Lena Conlin were able to complete the swim and bike in time to then run the marathon course and become Ironmen for the first time. Billy completed his three disciplines in 1:10:38, 6:56:54 and 4:12:00 for a total finish time of 12 hours 38 minutes 43 seconds, followed by Martin in 14:23:31 (1:17:07, 6:52:13 & 5:56:29)
Jill in 15:12:20 (1:35:08, 7:49:09 & 5:23:14)
and Lena in 15:38:32 (1:35:21, 7:55:55 & 5:43:48).
