Holts tackle Race to the Stones

Jill Holt had only a week to recover from her Ripon Triathlon as she and husband Matthew tackled the 100km (62.5 miles) Carphone Warehouse Race To The Stones. The race started at Chinnor in Oxford on Saturday 19 July and follows the ancient Ridgeway path to the stone circles at Avebury, and has excellent support stops provided at 10k intervals with the route well signposted.

Runners had to contend with hot and humid conditions and occasional hail storms, and as expected this proved more difficult as the day progressed. Jill and Matthew completed the first half in 6 hours 26 minutes with a stop for much needed pasta meal, but then the conditions turned worse. At stop 6 their departure was delayed as they took shelter from a hail storm and gale force winds, and also helped marshals and other runners from preventing the support tent from being blown away. Once the calm and humid weather returned they continued in the fading light meaning head torches were needed to complete the course, which they eventually did in 17 hours 34 minutes.
