Hardmoors 60

Ripon Runners endured unseasonably hot weather on Saturday 19 September as five members tackled the Hardmoors 60, with the heat resulting in 32 competitors withdraw along the way. The race actually measures just over 62 miles in distance, and has 11,400 feet of ascent during its route from Guisborough to Saltburn then along the east coast to via Runswick Bay, Ravenscar, Scarborough and ending in Filey.

Claire Baker scooped another award, her third in a row at a Hardmoors event, claiming third female overall and first FV40 in stunning time 12 hours 17 minutes. Next over the line was Sheena Jackson, who slowed down in the middle third of the race to help Matthew Holt, in 15 hours 14 minutes. Paul Walker finished in 15:23 to complete his grand slam of the 30, 55, 110 and 60 Hardmoor events for 2015. Colm O’Cofaigh was next in 17:05, with Matthew Holt (17:15) finishing with 45 minutes to spare from the 18 hour cut off time.

A special mention must go to Dennis Potton, a runner from Middlesbrough, who saved a child from drowning in the sea at Sandsend before going on to complete the race in just over 16 hours. A link to that story is here: http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/13772151.Drowning_boy_saved_after
