On Saturday 22 March Paul Walker and Matthew Holt tackled the Hardmoors race, a 55 mile long Ultra Marathon starting in Guisborough, which then follows the Cleveland Way taking in Roseberry Topping, Captain Cooks Monument, The Wainstones and Carlton Bank as part of its total 8,775 foot of ascent en-route to Osmotherley. After leaving Osmotherley, runners continue for 14 miles to the White Horse at Kilburn, then descend for the last 10 miles to Rievaulx before a final climb through woods to the finish at Helmsley Town Hall.
The marshalls and support were excellent all day, and apart from a few early hail and snow showers, clear skies offered great views from each peak and along the edge of the moors.
Of the 199 competitors, 29 retired during the race, but Paul Walker battled to the end for 34th overall finishing in 10 hours 12 minutes. Matthew Holt, completing the last 10 miles by head torch followed in 101st position overall in 12 hours 21 minutes.
