Gabriel leads Ripon round the Rock

Gale force winds didn’t deter Ripon Runners from tackling a 24 mile challenge run on Saturday 10 Jan as they headed to Yorkshires east coast.

The strong winds certainly made it tough going but blue skies meant the rain stayed away although temperatures did drop throughout the day.

The LDWA organised Scarborough Rock race starts at the village of Scalby and descends down to Scarborough’s town centre for a run along the beach. The route then climbs up to Oliver’s Mount and follows forest tracks, farmland and moorland with stunning green valleys and glorious views.

Completing the 24 mile route, which combined 2,434 foot of ascent, was Martin Gabriel, who took a steadier pace than usual to map read and help guide three of his team mates around the course. He finished joint 20th overall alongside Claire Baker, Anneke Imeson and Matthew Holt in 4 hours 52 minutes. Claire and Anneke were also joint second ladies overall.

The four were joined by Tim Joynson and Simon McCudden, and although Tim suffered from a knee problem during the middle section, which slowed him down he battled on, and they finished together in 5 hours 28 minutes.

Fred Clapham continued his walking of these events in 6 hours 21 minutes.
