On Saturday, and in perfect weather conditions, seven Ripon Runners tackled the Hardmoors 55 mile race from Helmsley to Guisborough, a tough undulating route with 8,000 feet of ascent. The first 20 miles to Osmotherley provides the easiest and most runnable section, with most of the ascent contained in the second half, as competitors have to go over Carlton Bank, Wainstones, Captain Cook’s Monument and Roseberry Topping to name a few.
First back to Guisborough for Ripon was Claire Baker, who finished in 10 hours 23 minutes and came 4th female overall for the second consecutive year, while Paul Walker completed his 4th consecutive 55 race in a time of 11 hours 5 minutes. Competing for the first time at the 55 was the trio of Jill Holt, Douglas Scott and Nicole Sutton, who all completed the massive challenge in great sub 12 hour times, with strong finishes from all three. Jill finished in 11 hours 40 minutes, with less than a minute separating Douglas and Nicole in 11 hours 49 minutes. Lena Conlin took almost an hour off last years time to finish in 12 hours 7 minutes. One of newest members, Lucy Smith finished in 13 hours 50 minutes, while Tony Carr battled to the end, just inside the 16 hour cut off time.
Lena and Claire have now completed 2 of the 4 races in 2017 of the Hardmoors Grandslam, and have 7 weeks until the next one, the 110 mile race from Filey to Helmsley.
