Five Ripon Runners competed against some of the country’s best fell runners in the Fairfield Horseshoe on Saturday. Setting off from Rydal Water in the Lake District, the 10 mile course took in 7 fells totalling 3,125 feet of ascent. Starting with a 2,000 ft ascent, runners soon hit very poor conditions as the mist came down with visibility was reduced to about 20 metres with slippery rocks underfoot. However, the last 3 miles gave runners a great descent back down the valley and warmer conditions. This race is one of the oldest fell races and really lived up to its reputation. Spike Ambery Smith had a great race coming 18th in 1 hour 34 minutes, followed by Alex Fawcett (1:44), Ben Imeson (1:54), Sally Houghton (1:58) and Martin Gabriel (2:13).
