Spine Success Helps Sponsor Swaledale Mountain Rescue
On 9th February, following our normal Tuesday run, we were both amazed and transfixed by a talk and film show by Matt Neal. Matt is an exceptional ultra runner with a roll call of some of the most famous ultra routes in Britain and Europe of which The Spine must be the most extreme. The competitors enter a continuous run along the 268 miles of the Pennine Way but in January! Whilst runners are free to rest, as long as they can get off the treacherous high moors and mountains, the clock starts ticking when they leave Edale in Derbyshire and doesn’t stop until they arrive at Kirk Yeltholm, the Northern end of the Pennine Way after about 4-5 days.
Matt showed us his equipment, the minimum necessary for survival in winter mountain conditions including an ultra-lightweight Terra Nova Laser tent. This was followed by the showing of the professionally made film, The Spine, then Matt took questions from an enthusiastic audience. The Rugby Club provided sarnies and chips, essential runner’s food.
Matt would not take a fee for his talk so we had a collection which raised well over £90. A cheque for £100 has been sent to Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team in the hope of course that we never need their services!
